Hannah was chosen from a shortlist of some of the biggest names in women’s football as the winner of the BBC World Service Award, announced on BBC’s Newsday on Tuesday morning.
These included Aitana Bonmati (Spain and Barcelona), Mariona Caldentey (Spain and Arsenal), Patri Guijarro (Spain and Barcelona) and Alessia Russo (England and Arsenal).
Hampton was named the world’s best goalkeeper at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony after her penalty shootout heroics helped England win Euro 2025.

She saved two penalties in the win over Spain in the final and did the same in the quarter-final win against Sweden.
Hampton, 24, has already won the Women’s Super League twice, the FA Cup and League Cup once, as well as two European Championships and reached a World Cup final.
Hampton also played a crucial role in Chelsea winning the domestic treble, winning the FA Cup and League Cup and, after an outstanding unbeaten season, lifting the Women’s Super League title last year.

Speaking about the 2025 BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award, Hampton said: “I definitely didn’t expect this. Given how all the other players were nominated, I think they’ve all had incredible years. I don’t think I did until the last moment when Sonia unveiled the trophy.”

“Winning the European Championship is special. Being able to wear an England badge is a special and proud moment. You never take it for granted. Even if it’s just around the hotel and you’re wearing the jersey, it’s always a nice moment when you have any England badge on your chest.”

“At club level, the season we had last year, the season in which we won the treble, it is an incredible achievement from the club and nothing less than what it deserves.”
The BBC Female Footballer of the Year award is in its 11th year. A panel of experts consisting of current and former professionals, coaches and journalists nominates their five best players from the past year. Football fans from all over the world will decide on the winner in a global online vote.
