Tottenham: Can Randal Kolo Muani play in the Champions League against parent club PSG?

Tottenham face another extremely difficult test this week with a trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

A humiliating defeat against Arsenal on Sunday, in which Spurs played defensively but still lost 4-1 to their bitterest rivals, left Thomas Frank & Co. licking their wounds.

Spurs fans will be demanding Frank produce a more attacking performance at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night and the choice of attackers will be crucial. With players like Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski still out and Brennan Johnson suspended, Frank still has decisions to make.

Xavi Simons, who didn’t start against Arsenal, will certainly feature against his former club, while Wilson Odobert and Mohammed Kudus are difficult options on the flanks. Lucas Bergvall will definitely be in the starting line-up after recovering from a concussion.

Richarlison scored a contender for the goal of the season against Arsenal from almost 40 yards out in an otherwise anonymous game that would open the door for Randal Kolo Muani to start.

But Kolo Muani is on loan from PSG this season. Does that complicate things? NO.

Why is Kolo Muani allowed to play against parent club PSG?

In the Premier League, a loan player is not allowed to play against his “parent club”. The rules state: “During the period of temporary transfer… a player may not play against the transferring club.” This has been the case since 2004.

However, due to UEFA’s competitive integrity rules, this is not the case in the Champions League. European football’s governing body has long made clear that there are “clear provisions which strictly prohibit any club from exerting or attempting to exert any influence over the players that another club may (or may not) use in a match.”

At the start of this season, Nicolas Jackson played for loan club Bayern Munich against parent club Chelsea.
